Turmeric, the Happy Spice

I don’t cook many things without turmeric. I love this spice! It has a cheerful, happy yellow color that just brightens up any dish. The flavor is delicate, slightly earthy, and can be used in almost anything, savory or sweet. It’s a “relative” of the Ginger Family (I adore ginger!). Medieval Europeans lovingly dubbed it the “Poor Man’s” Saffron, because it gave a similar effect at a much lower cost. It’s used to dye cloth, as well. Turmeric is a medicinal wonder and natural antibiotic, and has been used for thousands of years in India in ayurvedic (the knowledge for long life) medicine. The benefits of this spice go far beyond the gorgeous, uplifting shade of yellow. Give it a try.
